Are you seeking a volunteer position to share your skills and expertise, contribute to your CPD and support the next generation of engineers?
To facilitate the election of new members, the Institution’s MAPD department (Membership, Accreditation and Professional Development) works with several committees and assessment panels to deliver a diverse range of specialist assessment activities. Input and engagement from members across the Institution is a vital part of committee work and we are looking for Chartered Engineers, Incorporated Engineers and Engineering Technicians who would like to get involved. ‘Being a committee member is very rewarding’, says Academic Assessment Committee member David Gordon-Cranmer, ‘the satisfaction of being able to offer something back to a profession that has stood me in good stead for many years is immense’.
You are a professionally registered IMechE member with expertise, experience, and a desire to contribute to the work of the Institution. You strongly support the Institution’s aims, objectives and values and are keen to address the needs of the IMechE membership and the engineering community at large.
Examples of committee work include assessments, audits, and panel visits. You will discuss issues that affect the Institution and its members while contributing to the generation, development and improvement of new ideas, policies, and processes. You will participate in IMechE processes and procedures that maintain the highest standards across the Institution and will work closely with staff and members to provide effective representation for the Institution and the engineering community.
Committee work will greatly enhance your contribution to engineering and ensure you get the most out of your career. All volunteering roles offered by the Institution will contribute to your Continuing Professional Development (CPD), while broadening your professional horizons, developing your interpersonal skills, and providing the opportunity to meet engineers from a diverse range of disciplines and locations. You will benefit from the opportunity to explore a broad spectrum of engineering practice outside your own area of expertise and from the knowledge that you have played an important role in supporting the next generation of engineers.
Each committee carries out different work, so levels of commitment can vary. Membership terms are between three and five years and virtual or face-to-face meetings are held up to four times per year.
Six committees are currently looking for members, their focus ranging from ethical principles to academic assessment and professional development.
