Metallurgy for non-metallurgists

Summary

A two day technical overview of the scientific principles underlying metals technology and how they are applied in practice.

This course aims to provide a sound understanding of the scientific principles of metallurgy and how to apply them to specify and process metals in an industrial context. It will introduce you to the fundamental concepts of metallurgy without going into great technical depth.

Starting with the fundamental concepts of crystallography and phase diagrams for ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, the course progresses to consider metal casting and hot working, also sections covering stainless steels and non-ferrous alloys. The course then covers mechanical testing and concludes with case studies of some metallic failures and the reason behind the failure. 

Some prior understanding of metallurgical principles is assumed, possibly from our one day “Fundamentals of Metallurgy” course.
