IMechE Award for Risk Reduction in Mechanical Engineering

This may include reducing dangerous dust arising from mining and industrial tunneling during the removal of rock from the surface or under-ground as in the original bequest, but now could also be for any other aspect of reducing risk to health through the application of improved mechanical engineering.

Eligibility

Open to Institution members of all grades as well as non-members. 

Value of award

• £1,500 plus certificate to the lead author, certificate(s) to co-author(s).

Award winners

• 2020: Dr Emilio Martínez-Pañeda for his research into the development of computer models for preventing catastrophic failures in aggressive environments (stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen embrittlement and corrosion fatigue).
• 2018: Professor Jin Wang for his research into risk reduction, including two specific papers: "Collision detection in the UKCS" and "Ship/platform collision incident database", both published in 2018.
• 2017: Professor Michael Todinov MSc PhD DEng in recognition of his significant, sustained and verifiable contributions to reducing risk in mechanical engineering.
• 2015: Daeil Kim, Seibum B Choi and Mooryong Choi for their paper: ‘Integrated vehicle mass estimation for vehicle safety control using the recursive least-squares method and adaptation laws’.
• 2013: David Ward for recognition of his outstanding contribution to establishing international standards for system safety in the automotive industry.
