Dugald Clerk Prize

Awarded for papers published/or contribution/or achievement in the field of marine/automobile internal combustion engines.

Eligibility

  • Open to members and non-members of the Institution worldwide.

Award conditions

  • Annual award to author(s) of an original paper dealing with a subject with which the late Sir Dugald Clerk was associated, i.e. marine/automobile internal combustion engines, or for a contribution or achievement in that field.
  • The Group considers nominations and applications from individuals and agrees who should be offered the prize/award, details of which are sent to the Prizes and Awards Committee in May each year, for overall approval.
  • Once approved arrangements are made for the Group to present the prize/award.

  • Certificate.

Sir Dugald Clerk, 1854 - 1932

Clerk joined George Marks as a partner in the patent company of Marks & Clerk in 1882, which is now a major international player in patents and intellectual property law. An authority on internal combustion engines, he led engineering research during the First World War.  Clerk was appointed director of engineering research for the British Admiralty in 1916 and was knighted in 1917. He died in Surrey, England.
