Carly Nettleford

Carly Nettleford

Engineering Policy Advisor

Carly is a chartered engineer and joined the Institution of Mechanical Engineers as an Engineering Policy Advisor in April 2020. She works with the Head of Policy, other policy advisors and IMechE’s expert member groups to help shape the debate across the field of engineering policy.

Her enthusiasm for engineering comes from her love for technology. This enables her to provide engineering content across multiple media channels in a relatable way, drawing on her experience working with Young Members and apprentices.  She is passionate about encouraging more diversity in engineering and encourages young people, ethnic minorities and women to join the engineering sector, encouraging change to be present through the world of innovation.

She began her engineering career in 2012 when she completed a pre-apprenticeship programme gaining a BTEC Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering and an NVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations (PEO). She went on to complete a three and a half-year apprenticeship in just two years and was recognised for her achievements by winning the Apprentice of The Year award at the West London business awards. Here she obtained both an HNC and an NVQ level 3 in Electrical Engineering and Electronics. She has worked for companies such as Ultra Electronics, UTC and Siemens. Carly has already built up several years of hands-on and field experience and brings these skills and understanding of a number of engineering sectors, with her to the IMechE.
